Earring is one of the popular jeweleries not only in India but every where.
The history of earring goes back to the ancient times. If you make a careful analysis of the dress and jewelleries of ancient civilizations, there will be evidence of people wearing earrings apart from necklaces, bangles and other jeweleries. Earrings were quite common and popular jeweleries from the ancient times. During the age of Indus Valley Civilization and the Rig Vedic age earrings were used not only by women but also men. Slowly and gradually the earrings became popular only with women. However in recent times earrings have gained popularity among men.

From ancient times men and women wear jeweleries of gold and silver. Diamond earrings are also quite common nowadays. Even people who cannot afford to buy diamond jewelleries are trying to add a diamond earring in their jewellery box. Platinum earrings are however common with only few. Though platinum stands for grace and sophistication yet only few can afford to buy platinum because of its price. Pearl earrings are fast becoming popular among the youngsters and working women.
Apart from traditional gold, silver, pearl and diamond earrings, those of crystals, onyx, lapis lazuli are fast gaining popularity. The minakari earrings are also favorite with some women. In recent times trendy earrings are fast gaining popularity particularly among the teenagers. Rodium polished earrings have sophisticated appearance. As the price of gold and precious stones like rubies, emerald, sapphires are going high people are preferring costume jewelleries.
Earrings are worn by piercing the earlobe. Apart from the earlobes earrings are also worn on the rook, helix or tragus. If you are piercing the earlobes then it is simply termed as ear piercing. If you want to wear the earring on the external part of your ear then you have to undergo cartilage piercing. Cartilage piercing is however quite difficult process.
Instances of ear piercing is evident in history of nearly all countries. But the earliest example of ear piercing is found in Petropolis situated in Persia. Later on it became popular in all cultures.
Ear piercing became common in the United States of America in 1920. However in later years with the discovery of the clip on earrings the trend of ear piercing suffered a set back. But inspite of the popularity of the clip on earrings ear piercing still continues.
In India ear piercing was common from the ancient times and earrings continued to be a part of the popular jewelleries. Earrings are available in different sizes and designs. The commonest form of earrings that are used by the women in India are the ear studs. Hoop earrings that are popular known as the jhumkas in India are favorite with the women. Jhumkas which vary in size and design find place in the wardrobes of all Indian women.
Slave earrings, ear cuffs and stick on earrings are also very common. A most interesting feature about the earrings is that they can be worn with any outfit.
Earrings are and will continue to be one of the most popular and favorite jeweleries not only in India but also throughout the world.
